I Got a Free, Neglected & Rare V12 BMW E32 750iL Highline

A very nice subscriber from the Netherlands generously decided to give me his old car. It's in rough shape and hasn't run in several years, but it's a very rare and sought-after Highline model of the E32 750iL. The highest optioned and most expensive 7 series of the early '90s, equipped with rear climate controls, picnic tables, heated & electric rear seats and a fridge among other things. Is it worth saving though?

  • I was watching this video and thinking "ha, I got my E32 sight-unseen from Germany and it has no rust on it". After forgetting it in the garage for 2 years I took it for service/mot... and found that there is paint bubbling up on the doors. Scheisse.

  • The E32 is such a pretty car. The electronics... When they're working they are fabulous! When they're not, well.... The E32 750i, iL and iL Highline, well they're beautiful automotive poetry when they're fully operational! Those intake gaskets, the coolant pipe in the V12 valley, the dual Motronics + EML malarkey, the parts availablility and the lack of diagnostics equipment that can talk to the various ECUs... I tried with a decent 1990 750i, but when my specially made forum-sourced diagnostics tool failed to talk to the ECU and the BMW dealer was unable to talk to the ECU with their equipment... Well i had to raise my white flag. There was oil on the plugs, i couldn't find new ignition cables that had the ring-sensors for one of the cables on each bank, it would run on all 12 above idle sometimes and it would go into limp-mode with the EML light on at other times, and the biggest problem was the HC levels in the exhaust for the inspection. Ironically, Sweden changed the rules so that older cars only have to pass the CO reading in the exhaust, but by that time the car was in limp mode almost all of the time and it was misfiring consistently at an idle almost all of the time.

  • Sreten that's a V8 bumper, probably from an early 740. Only M60 powered cars had those brake vents at the very bottom.

    • @M539 Restorations oh, I thought those bumpers were exclusive to v8 e32 and e34.. never stop learning !

    • Negative, that's a V12 bumper that came on later E32s like this '91 750iL.

Klassenziel erreicht.

  • The only thing that gets me through these grim vids of your utterly dreadful junk cars is your sense of humour. When I look back on the utterly dreaful junk British cars I restored back in the 80s & 90s I never understood my parents disdain for my happy hobby. Now I fully understand and deeply resepect your enthusiasm. My fishy looking BMW Z3 was the first in the UK as far as I remember. I wonder what has happened to it.

He fixed a LOT of rust on his epic E30 rebuild and I thought maybe it could give you some hope and inspiration for some welding and bodywork.

  • Wow that is really rusty. I sold not so long ago the family kept and bought new in 89 a manual malachit 735i with cognac full leather interior. It had literally no rust. Only a little on the doors. Always stored inside and had 175k kms. Just part it for parts. It is only a 7 series. And honestly, those cars aren’t worth a lot. And in my opinion those are not classic cars, but ancient early computers. I prefer older cars.

From Canada, I wish you good health and the best of luck in your endeavor. To paraphrase Der Michel "Where All the Roads Have Ended, the Path you Walk does Not. These machines and great treasures, will not be left to rot." P.S. I hope you don't mind me calling her Cristine (German name) based on her color...and I'm most definitely seeing myself in this once it has been restored to her original glory.

  • Radiator is obviously replaced when that clutch fan grenaded and the fan smashed into it like they all do. Clutch fans suck. The v8 and v12 cars sound like a big rig with the clutch fan in place. E-fan is the way to go. Not a bad looking e32 especially for free! Depending on the production date the e32 750 came with the 3.15lsd. Pretty sure pre 7/ 91 had the 3.15 installed. They are a great upgrade on the e34 540/6 cars for the OEM 2.93 open diff. All you need to do is change out the input flange and it's a direct swap. Makes a hell of a difference in the e34 540/6. I had 2 of them and they were one of my favorite bimmers out of my fleet. Thanks for sharing this.

  • Why do those cars break down so much? Built well, and doesn't rust, but the mechanics of german cars suck. Ask any Volkwagen owner between 2000, and 2009. I had 750iL, had to sell it because it went into failsafe. ECM/brain went out. So I wired up a push button, after turning on key, just to drive it in 4th gear.

  • It's just a thrill to watch people using their talents and skills in fields I haven't had the pleasure to experience in any degree, like here: Restoration of automobiles. Watching your BGworld videos among others from Europe and North America have surely expanded my knowledge, but the true delight is to watch people like you with much better skills and talents than mine doing their best, explaining along the way and showing it to the world. I get why you're going for the large V-engines. Sometimes these formerly extremely expensive luxury cars comes for free. Other times very cheaply. And with a bit of this and a bit of that, you have a running V12 vehicle and ain't that one of the nicest sounds one can think of. Age doesn't matter with these cars. Restored and refurbished, they're still oozing luxury all over the place and when you've dumped your bags with purchased goods from the grocery store in the trunk, closed it and turned the key....the sound from a V12 in the parking lot is way different than all the 4-cylinders combined. I do wonder if it may even be cheaper to run a restored V12 BMW for 3 years, than buying a factory fresh tax-burdened 4-cylinder and using that for 3 years. Hat's off. Love it.
