Perseverance Rover’s Descent and Touchdown on Mars (Official NASA Video)

NASA's Mars 2020 Perseverance mission captured thrilling footage of its rover landing in Mars' Jezero Crater on Feb. 18, 2021. The real footage in this video was captured by several cameras that are part of the rover's entry, descent, and landing suite. The views include a camera looking down from the spacecraft's descent stage (a kind of rocket-powered jet pack that helps fly the rover to its landing site), a camera on the rover looking up at the descent stage, a camera on the top of the aeroshell (a capsule protecting the rover) looking up at that parachute, and a camera on the bottom of the rover looking down at the Martian surface.

The audio embedded in the video comes from the mission control call-outs during entry, descent, and landing.

  • Ummm, how is the camera sending real time footage back to EARTH? And why didn't the perseverance camera capture footage of the journey to Mars? ( It would be especially great to see footage of Earth) And how did perseverance go beyond the radiation belts?

    Cola ImnidaCola Imnidaпреди 22 часа
    • Those who talk most about "radiation belts" are usually those who know the least about it. By, the way, don't you know the Earth is flat?

      Релёкс84Релёкс84преди 9 часа
    • Perseverance was encapsulated within the back shell and heat shield during the journey to Mars. There was no way for it to take images or video. The cruise stage was not equipped with cameras. We’ve known how to mitigate the hazard of the Van Allen belts for more than 60 years. A combination of shielding and a trajectory that minimizes exposure is all that is required. The idea that the Van Allen belts are some sort of impenetrable barrier is a persistent misconception. As other commenters have mentioned, the videos were not received in real time. The rover recorded the various EDL videos and then downloaded them to Earth a day or two after the landing.

      Steve AdamsSteve Adamsпреди 11 часа
    • There are no extreme problems with passing the radiation belts. This thing has explained a long time ago.

      Mike PMike Pпреди 13 часа
    • It is not real time video. It was sent on Earth days after the landing. NASA merged the 2 videos to match with the telemetry data they were receiving.
